what to see in benitachell

What to see in and around Benitachell?

The coast of Alicante is full of pretty villages with spectacular scenery, and Benitachell is undoubtedly one of them. It is a small village with a lot of charm, but it is not on the coast, you will have to go a few kilometres inland to stroll through its narrow streets and enjoy the feeling of peace and nature provided by its almond and grape crops. We recommend visiting it in February to observe the beauty of the fields in full bloom.

In this town, as well as being able to enjoy incredible beaches, climbing and hiking are also very popular. There are plenty of routes to enjoy breathtaking views while exercising in nature.

Without a doubt, this small town located between Jávea and Moraira and with only 12 square kilometres, is worth a visit, and if you do the route of the viewpoints, it will become one of your favourite places in the world. Shall we take you?

You can book your transfer from Alicante airport to Benitachell, the easiest and most direct way of transfer from Alicante airport, our on-demand service with only 5 stops each way will allow you to get to Benitachell with total peace of mind.

THE BEACHES OF BENITACHELL

The coves are one of the greatest treasures of the Alicante coastline, and the three you can find in Benitachell are spectacular.  In just two kilometres, you can enjoy amazing coves, with crystal clear waters and underwater caves.

Los Tiestos Cove

This beach is characterised by its exclusivity and difficult access.  In order to reach it on foot, you have to go through the last stretch of the ravine of hell. It is a stone wall that you will have to descend with the help of a rope that you will find in the mountain. Due to the difficulty of the descent, we recommend that you do not carry more than one backpack, and if you can, bring your own climbing equipment or at least good footwear.
Another way to reach this cove is by swimming from the Moraig cove or by boat.
It is certainly worth the effort to reach it and enjoy a little peace and quiet in this secluded and isolated spot.

Moraig cove
This is undoubtedly the best known and therefore most popular cove in the area. It is a beach of intense blue, cliffs and sea caves that make this place exceptional. But as with the previous beach, access to it is somewhat complicated. As it is again between cliffs, it is not possible to reach the beach by car. You will have to leave your car in the car park just before going down to the cove and either walk or wait for the free bus provided by the town hall to get to the cove (July, August, September).

It is a small gravel beach with transparent waters, ideal for bathing and diving, characterised by the cleanliness and quality of its waters.

In addition to the attractions of Cala del Moraig itself, there is the "Cova del Arcs" (Cave of the Arcs), a marvel of nature and the gateway to the Moraig Underwater Route. Access to the cove is via the Cumbre del Sol residential development, along the General Playa road, signposted from the entrance to the development. In addition, from this cove there are several signposted hiking routes that offer access to the other two coves in the village.

Cala Llebeig

Another unspoilt cove, with no tourist services, but with a special charm. It has a rock and gravel beach, three small buildings, which do not break the aesthetics of the place, and some caves fitted out to store fishing gear in the past. It is another hidden gem that can be reached by taking a stroll. It is neither complicated nor difficult, but we recommend that you bring trainers and a bottle of water for the journey.

This small cove with crystal clear water is located between the border of Benitachell and Teulada-Moraira. It can be reached by sea or on foot via various hiking routes, such as the Cliffs Route, which goes from Moraig to Llebeig Cove. You can also find it on other routes such as the Ruta del Portet de Moraira to Llebeig Cove, we can say without a doubt that Llebeig Cove is a natural paradise in the Mediterranean.

What to see and do in Benitachell?

The town enjoys numerous viewpoints from which to enjoy its rural landscape, in fact, there are numerous almond and grape plantations at the foot of the Montgó. Its privileged location allows you to contemplate, with a single glance, from Ibiza to the Peñón de Ifach, the majestic Montgó or the Sierra de Bernia.

It is a perfect place for scuba diving enthusiasts who can discover the attractive and interesting caves and places that follow one after the other without interruption.

Benitachell's coastline is unusually beautiful for its beaches and coves, and its landscape is rich in unique features, such as its cliffs more than 100 metres above sea level. It is a perfect place to discover marine nature through the numerous caves and grottoes that exist in the municipality, as well as to practice water sports such as sailing, scuba diving or snorkelling, surrounded by an attractive, well-kept and charming landscape.

All the coves in Benitachell are perfect for scuba diving or snorkelling and getting lost in the marine world for a while. If you really like this sport and have some experience, we recommend you to do the underwater route El Derrumbre. The landscape will be dominated by posidonia and you will live an adventure among caves and marine animals. You have all the information on this link.

Also in the port of Moraira is the Diving Centre La Galera. There you will find courses, baptisms, excursions and other services that can be very useful.

Poble Nou de Benitachell is also worth a visit, with its church, of great architectural interest, its small streets with slopes and white houses, but above all the almond and grape plantations around and the Riuraus, constructions with arches typical of the area that were used to dry the grapes.

We recommend you to taste the muscatel grape (typical of this area) in all its forms.

ROUTES AROUND BENITACHELL

The entire coastal area is made up of cliffs, with ancient paths that are well worth a walk. The Cliffs Route is the main one, but not the only one.
In addition to the impressive views of the Mediterranean Sea, you will be struck by the stone enclosures of some of the caves. It is said that they once served as a refuge for locals and also for smugglers.

If you are a lover of tranquillity, hiking and breathtaking landscapes, the route of the Cliffs and the Barranco del Infierno ravine is a discovery for you. The starting point of this route is the Cala del Moraig. Once you are there you can decide what kind of route you want to do. You can choose between something more difficult and risky to get your adrenaline pumping, or do a quieter route through viewpoints.

The Route of the Tombs

Our most adventurous proposal. It is also known as the Barranco del Infierno (Hell's Ravine) and arrives right at the Los Testos cove. Its difficult access has allowed a great level of conservation of this luminous virgin beach embedded between the vertical walls of the cliffs and the imposing Morro Falquí. In the past, clay containers (testos) were placed to collect the water that dripped from the vaults of the cave, and this custom is the origin of the name of the cave, the cove and the ravine. Although this route is only half a kilometre long, it is not at all easy, so we recommend you wear good footwear and a swimming costume for the ultimate prize.

The Miradors route

Here is a list of the best viewpoints in Benitachell. Between the viewpoints there is a recreational area with wooden tables and benches protected by the shade of the pine trees. A perfect place to have a picnic and enjoy the suggestive views. We can also take a detour a few metres from the path to visit an old lime kiln, a construction that was used until the seventies of the last century and in which the limestone extracted from the quarries was converted into lime. It was a communal property and the lime obtained had numerous uses, from whitewashing the houses to cleaning the flocks or macerating olives and sultanas.

The Benitachell viewpoints:

El Portalet viewpoint. It is right in the centre of the village of El Poble Nou. You can see all the fields and vineyards from here.
Los Tiestos viewpoint. From the top of Los Tiestos cove, Dels Testos in Valencian, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Mediterranean.
Moraig viewpoint. As in the previous case, you can see the Mediterranean Sea in all its splendour, as well as the Moraig Fault.
Cantal de Gener and Punta de l'Alderà viewpoints. In addition to the sea views, this viewpoint will impress you with its steep cliffs.
Puig Llorença viewpoint. From this viewpoint you will have a spectacular 360º view. On one side you can see the sea and on the other, kilometres of coastal land. On clear days you can make out the Balearic Islands.

The Benitachell cliffs route

As well as being the most beautiful in the area, it can be done with children and runs along the entire coast. Like the rest of the proposals, the route starts from the Moraig cove car park: a few metres up the road, there is a path that shows the way to Llebeig cove. It takes approximately one hour to go and one hour to return. It is important to take comfortable walking shoes, water and, although it is not summer, it is best to do it early in the morning or after 15:00 hours, as in this part of the mountain the eastern sun beats down throughout the morning. Or better still, wait until the sun goes down and enjoy the autumn sunsets, with their reddish, orange, pink and purple skies. It is a path that runs for four kilometres of overflowing beauty where sea and mountain are one and the same thing in a rugged landscape between the shimmering ocean and the majestic mountain.

Once you have done these routes, or spent the whole day discovering the nooks and crannies of Benitachell, there is nothing better than enjoying the local gastronomy.

In Benitachell you can find a wide variety of different types of food, as a large part of the population is foreign. In the village there is not a great offer, but just a few kilometres away you have Jávea, Moraira or Dénia where the gastronomic offers are really wide.

Without a doubt, on your visit to Benitachell we recommend the Restaurant La Cumbre, a perfect place to go with family or friends. It has a good and varied menu. They also have a swimming pool and sun loungers for their customers.

If you like Asian food you have to go to Beniasia, authentic and quality food at a very good price.

If you are looking for something more traditional, with a good atmosphere, a warm and cosy terrace in summer but without neglecting the gourmet details, you have to visit the restaurant Ca La iaia, on the road to Teulada - Moraira.

Don't miss the typical sweets of the area, the sweet potato cakes which have a similar shape to pasties, but with a very sweet flavour. Fritters are another of the typical sweets of the area. They are made with pumpkin mixed with flour and are characterised by their doughnut shape. They are usually served with sugar or accompanied by chocolate for dipping and can be found at fairs and markets. Caspell is another of the typical sweets of the area and is made with flour, oil, muscatel sultanas and almond sugar.
