This quiet municipality in the Marina Alta is the link between the coast and the mountain villages. Pedreguer borders Llosa de Camacho (Alcalalí), Beniarbeig, Benidoleig, Denia, Gata de Gorgos, Jalón, Lliber and Ondara. So it is a good place if you like both and want to be close to both.
Pedreguer is the perfect place to lose yourself in its narrow streets and enjoy the tranquillity, stroll through the streets of the village, enjoy its gastronomy, contemplate ancient constructions such as the "Porxens" and much more, in this guide we will tell you first hand the best plans for your visit to Pedreguer and its surroundings.

What are the Porxens?

The Porxens are iron and tile constructions that used to be in the square of the villages of the Marina Alta to protect the municipal markets, the one in Pedreguer is the only one that remains in good condition, it also has a drinking fountain between the two porches that connects to the town square which was restored in 1990, we definitely recommend you visit it on market day and live the experience as a Pedreguero more.

Mountain routes in Pedreguer

If you are more of a mountain person, Pedreguer has a wide variety of very interesting hiking routes to do on foot, by bike or motorbike. The surrounding area is full of places worthy of stopping, breathing and enjoying.

The Windmills and Miquelet Route

On this route the main tourist attraction are the windmills, which are located in the middle of the valley formed by the Sella and the mountain of Pedreguer. These are two windmills, whose power was used to grind cereal grain and obtain flour.
Both mills were built in 1850, as can be seen on the lintel of the door of the smaller one. In the past, the interior was divided into three floors, but over time the interior rooms have disappeared, and both mills were restored in 2016 to guarantee their conservation.
The Ruta dels Molins de Pedreguer is a must not only for hiking enthusiasts, but also for history lovers in general. A route that complements the range of geographical, natural, architectural, gastronomic and other treasures of the Marina Alta.

It is a low-difficulty route of about 6 kilometres in length (about 2 hours, at a moderate-slow pace). It starts in the municipality of Pedreguer itself and heads towards the aforementioned mills, although it includes, as we shall see, many other historical treasures that are a must if you are spending a few days in the interior of the Marina Alta.

To start the Ruta dels Molins we must go to the Glorieta Pedreguer, the starting point of our adventure. A walk that will continue along Col-legi street, from where we will cross the road, to reach, along Furs street, the pou de la Murta. This well is located on a path of the same name and forms part of the network of wells that used to supply water for many activities, mainly livestock farming.

Once past the well, the path continues right next to the cemetery, crossing the Marx ravine and beginning the ascent to the two mills, which until a few decades ago were used to make the local blat* one of the best flours on the Mediterranean coast, taking advantage of the wind power in the area. Many people, when they see them at first sight, mistake them for watchtowers, due to their structure.

The Mills Route lasts approximately 2 hours, and its difficulty is low, so it is recommended for all kinds of people.

Route to the summit of Ocaive Castle

A beautiful hike that you will enjoy both on arrival, for its incredible views, and along the way. The route has many sections where you walk surrounded by vegetation but always keeping the path, it is of a moderate level, around 7 kilometres and can be done in about three hours starting at the old Pedreguer reservoir.

Hermitage of San Blai or La Capelleta:

It is worth visiting the hermitage of San Blai, "la capelleta", at the foot of the mountain, which is accessed by a way of the cross of cypress trees.
You will find the Capelleta in the upper part of Pedreguer, at the foot of the Muntanya Gran and the Creueta de la Llagosta.

The Mirabarques viewpoint

We also recommend going up to the "Mirabarques" (look out for boats), the viewpoint from which you can see the best views of the area.
It is a metal monument that supports a semicircular wooden platform, built on top of the mountain Monte Pedreguer and from 1998 gives us the opportunity to enjoy wonderful views of much of the Marina Alta, you can even see the Mediterranean, and a picturesque sea of pools.
This excursion is recommended for the whole family and can be easily reached even with our private vehicle if we wish, its location is very easy to find by consulting Google Maps.

Route to the Top of the Ocaive Castle and Circular Route

A beautiful excursion that we will enjoy both on arrival, for its incredible views, and along the way. The route has many sections that run surrounded by vegetation but always preserving the path.
It is of a moderate level, about 7 kilometres and can be done in about three hours starting at the old Pedreguer reservoir.

If we want a longer and more complete option, we recommend the circular route, in this link you will find several options created by local hikers that will be very useful. These variants of the path run, for the most part, along beautiful narrow paths, through steeply sloping terraced land, which during the 19th century was used to grow sultanas to satisfy the strong demand from Great Britain and other northern European countries.

The route will captivate you right from the start. Its landscape, views and history are well worth the effort. If you want to know all the points of interest along this route and also the history behind it, we recommend this article on the route.

Pedreguer with kids

Albarda garden

If you are looking for something to do with children in this village or near Denia or Jávea, we recommend you to visit the Albarda garden. This Mediterranean garden of 50,000 m2 with more than 700 species of native plants is a wonderful place to breathe peace, learn new things and enjoy nature and beauty. It recreates the image of the old Valencian Renaissance gardens, influenced by Arab culture. They are symmetrical gardens that give the sensation that the surrounding landscape is part of the garden.

In summer, you can even enjoy live music while you have a drink in the cafeteria that houses the private estate in the middle of the gardens. It is a marvel.

At the entrance to the garden there is a little house where you can pay the entrance fee and where they give you a map of the garden and advise you on a tour. You can also choose to let yourself go and discover the garden by getting lost.

It is an ideal place to spend a morning or an afternoon and enjoy its corners in peace and quiet. You are spoilt for choice. There is an umbraculum with large plants, fountains with goldfish, pergolas to enjoy the shade, sculptures...

Cueva de las Calaveras de Benidoleig (Cave of the Skulls of Benidoleig)

Another very cool visit if you go with children, is the cave of the Calaveras, in Benidoleig, very close to Pedreguer.  The cave is on the road from Benidoleig to Pedreguer, there is parking at the entrance of the cave and on the other side of the road. Tickets can be bought in the souvenir shop (3,90€ for adults and 2€ for children over 4 years old).

We recommend reading about the history of the cave before visiting, you can do so on their website or download a pdf brochure to your mobile phone. At the entrance to the cave there is a very interesting large poster explaining how people lived in prehistoric times, as well as a couple of dinosaurs (for decoration) and two very funny cavemen as if they were the guardians of the cave.

Viewpoint of Monte Pedreguer

Another visit that will delight the little ones is the viewpoint of Monte Pedreguer, being at the top of the mountain, we will have incredible panoramic views. On clear days you can even see Ibiza.

WHERE TO EAT IN PEDREGUER

Pedreguer is a charming village, and its gastronomy is not far behind. The most typical dishes that you will be able to taste in most of its bars are: Cocas, both the traditional ones and the more creative and tasty combinations that are becoming more and more common. Stuffed pasties, prawns with chard, octopus with cardoons, cocas de Dacsa (corn cakes), snails and rice with peeled broad beans.

El Brou Restaurant

One of our recommendations for tasting the typical delicacies of the area is the El Brou Restaurant, located in the heart of the historic quarter. Very close to the church. Modern cuisine with good interpretations of traditional dishes, fresh and modern, like the chef, with criteria and without pre-established rules. The short but exceptional wine list, with local wines, is a real treat for the senses.

Llauraor Bar

If the plan is to go on a route and have a good lunch, we recommend the Llauraor bar. Authentic homemade food prepared with great care. Good service and unbeatable value for money. You can enjoy traditional tapas, pickles of all kinds prepared by themselves. A wide range of all kinds of cakes, including vegetarian options. Rice dishes, fideuas and all kinds of traditional stews.
We can eat there or order to take away and enjoy it wherever we want.
